The sector holds a significant share of the working-age population, predominantly composed of youth with an average age of under 35 years. The share of males employed in the sector slightly outnumbers females. While two-thirds of the workforce have primary education, the sector also provides opportunities for individuals with higher education levels, including secondary school and university graduates. Skilled professionals from various fields of education are also attracted by the sector. Service and sales workers, elementary occupations and craft-related trade workers dominate other occupations. Key sub-sectors include hairdressing and beauty treatment, along with textile and fur product cleaning. Self-employment is common, with over half being own account workers, emphasizing job vulnerability. Male management prevails in the sector, and the majority of enterprises are individually owned by Rwandans. Micro enterprises comprise 84 percent of the sector's establishments, largely informal, while formal enterprises account for only 4 percent.
